Most GEO conversations center on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Copilot gets less attention, despite sitting inside Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365 for hundreds of millions of users. If your brand shows up incorrectly or not at all when someone asks Copilot about your category, the fix looks different than fixing a ChatGPT problem.

What Copilot actually is

Copilot on the web and in Edge is Microsoft’s consumer-facing AI assistant, built on OpenAI’s models and layered on top of Bing’s search infrastructure. That second part matters more than most teams realize. Copilot does not just generate an answer from what the model learned during training. For most factual and current-events queries, it runs a Bing search first, pulls a set of results, and grounds its answer in those pages.

This makes Copilot’s retrieval behavior closer to Perplexity than to a plain ChatGPT conversation without browsing enabled. The model is a writer summarizing search results, not a standalone source of truth.

How Copilot retrieves information

When someone asks Copilot a question that requires current information, product comparisons, or specifics about a company, the flow generally works like this:

  1. Copilot interprets the query and generates one or more search queries.
  2. Those queries run against the Bing index, the same index that powers Bing search results and Bing’s AI Overviews.
  3. Copilot selects a subset of the returned pages to read and pulls specific claims, numbers, and phrases from them.
  4. The response is composed with inline citations linking back to the source pages.

The practical implication is that your visibility in Copilot tracks your visibility in Bing far more closely than your visibility in Google. A page that ranks well in Google but has never been properly indexed by Bing is starting from a real disadvantage in Copilot.

Why Copilot citations look different from ChatGPT’s

The three major assistants source information differently enough that treating them as one target is a mistake.

Copilot’s numbered citation style is closer to a traditional search results page than a conversational answer. Each claim tends to map back to a specific source, which means a single well-structured page can pick up multiple citations within one answer if it contains multiple extractable facts.

What determines whether Copilot cites your page

Since Copilot’s web answers are grounded in Bing, the fundamentals are closer to technical SEO than to pure content strategy:

  • Bingbot access. Check your robots.txt for any rule blocking User-agent: Bingbot or User-agent: BingPreview. This is a separate check from confirming GPTBot or ClaudeBot access, and it’s easy to miss if your GEO checklist only covers OpenAI and Anthropic crawlers.
  • Bing indexing status. Submit your sitemap through Bing Webmaster Tools and confirm your key pages are actually indexed, not just crawled. A page can be crawled without being added to the index Copilot draws from.
  • Content clarity per page. Because Copilot extracts individual claims for its numbered citations, pages with clear, standalone statements of fact perform better than pages that require reading several paragraphs to piece together an answer.
  • Freshness signals. Bing weights recency for time-sensitive queries. A page with a visible, accurate last-updated date has an edge over one with no date signal at all.

Copilot in Microsoft 365 is a different system

It’s worth separating two things that get lumped together under the same product name. Copilot on the consumer web (copilot.microsoft.com, Edge’s sidebar) grounds its answers in the public Bing index, as described above. Copilot inside Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, Teams) grounds its answers primarily in a user’s own organizational data through Microsoft Graph, not the public web.

That means optimizing your public content for GEO has no direct effect on how Microsoft 365 Copilot behaves inside a company’s internal environment. If your goal is public brand visibility, the consumer Copilot experience is the one to track.

A basic checklist for Copilot visibility

  • Confirm Bingbot is not blocked in robots.txt.
  • Submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools and check indexing status for your priority pages.
  • Test a handful of buyer-relevant prompts directly in Copilot and note which pages get cited, if any.
  • Look at whether competitor pages showing up in Copilot answers have something structurally different, like a comparison table, a direct definition paragraph, or a clearer pricing breakdown.
  • Recheck after major content updates. Because Copilot leans on a live index rather than static training data, changes can show up faster than they would in a model’s baked-in knowledge.

Copilot is not a smaller version of ChatGPT. It’s a search-grounded assistant with its own indexing pipeline, and treating it that way is what actually moves the needle on getting cited.
